Is Interactive TV About to Explode?
Seven out of 10 viewers surveyed by Harris Interactive last November and December already utilize their remotes to make their television watching experiences more dynamic. This includes scheduling DVR recordings, scrolling through programming options, and requesting content on demand. Research like this, coupled with such business deals as TiVo joining forces with YouTube and Nielsen Company using Charter Communications's set-top boxes to conduct their surveys may hint that we're on the verge of an interactive TV explosion.

The Internet: It Might Kill TV Someday, But No Day Soon
Love it or hate it, TV, with millions of people on their butts watching it, is sticking around for a while. And even when that evil genius Steve Jobs converts his little hobby, AppleTV into something useful - like a high definition set-top box with a built in DVR and a broadband connection to the Internet, and even when he starts selling HBO and other content a la carte over it - for most people, that box will be in their living rooms, on their big screen with their butts on their couches and recliners.

Google extends AdSense model to video overlays
Google is extending the InVideo advertising format it has pioneered on YouTube, the video sharing site it now owns, and plans to extend it across video partner sites in its content network. This will enable advertisers to run a single contextually-targeted video overlay campaign across a large network of sites.

Interactive Television Advertising
Interactive television and interactive television advertising are nothing new. Many of us have been talking about them for years. While some people have been struggling to make the advertisements themselves interactive, the real deal may be to make the marketing messages more meaningful to the relevant viewers, writes William Cooper of informitv.

Two new journal special issues on interactive TV have been published. The featured papers are revised and extended versions of the papers that have previously appeared in EuroITV 2006 in Athens, Greece and EuroITV07 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The special issue in ACM Computers in Entertainment is entitled "Social television and user interaction". The special issue in the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction is entitled "Social Interactive Television". Both special issues are available online.

The deadline for late submissions (Short Papers, Posters, Doctoral Consortium, Demos) to EuroITV08 is approaching fast. We welcome papers that address the special theme, as well as the rest of the submission categories. Please submit your contribution in accordance to the EuroITV08 submission guidelines by February 29th, 2008.

Two new books on interactive TV have been released. The books feature a collection of papers from EuroITV06 and EuroITV07. The latter is titled Interactive TV: A Shared Experience (2007) and was published by Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science, while the former is titled Interactive Digital Television: Technologies and Applications (2007) and was published by IGI.

The 6th European Interactive TV conference (EuroITV08) will be hosted by the ICT&S Center (Center for Advanced Studies and Research in Information and Communication Technologies & Society), University of Salzburg, Austria. More information is available on the EuroITV08 conference web site.

The registration system for EuroITV07 is now closed because there are no places left! For those who could not find a place in the conference, EuroITV07 proceedings will be published by Springer LNCS in July 2007.

The final program of the EuroITV07 conference is now available. The early registration for the conference ends on March 15th. There are only 140 places available at the conference venue, so please register online soon.

The review process has been completed. In brief, out of the 80 papers, 25 papers will be accepted for the conference proceedings with Springer LNCS and a number of papers will be invited for the work in progress category.

The EuroITV07 program committee has received approximately 80 submissions of interesting papers for the conference. The total number of full papers represents a 50% increase compared to EuroITV06. Accepted papers will be published by Springer in an edited volume of the series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). Adjunct proceedings (late submissions) will be published by the Tampere University of Technology. The call for late submissions (research-in-progress, demos, videos, doctoral consortium) is still open.
