Invitation for articles
Authors of published papers (in conferences or journals) are cordially invited to submit short versions of their papers, in the form of web articles, for publication in this site. Authors are benefited by the high visibility of the Web medium --2.000 page views for the articles section during March-April-May 2003-- and they can gain new readership for their original papers --5.000 page views for the paper section during March-April-May 2003.
Web articles are more accessible to a wider audience, compared with the traditional conference and journal formats. The articles section has been designed to be complementary to and supportive to more traditional publishing venues, which should remain an author's first choice for improving, validating and disseminating new research.
We are asking for a short version of a published paper because we currently lack the resources for doing a formal review of submitted articles, so we have to reside on high-quality material which has been reviewed and improved elsewhere.
We are asking for a short Web article because this is how writing for the Web works. People rarely read long articles online. The objective is to have a short and practical article and guide them into reading the full article found elsewhere, in case they are interested in the details of the full study.
In our opinion, Web articles smooth out the learning curve from knowing nothing about a specific subject to reading the respective in-depth academic paper. Web article readers get an overview of the research, in a number of dimensions like contribution, significance, references, all of these in a fraction of the time and effort that would be required for the same article in its original paper format.
Guidelines for authors
The most straight-forward approach to write an article is to model it after a similar one of the articles section. For example, authors reporting on project results may use the format of the iMEDIA article. Literature reviews can be modeled after the media consumption studies article. New designs can be reported after the virtual channel model article.
A few more specific guidelines would be the following:
Articles should be between 5 and 10 paragraphs. Each paragraph should be about 3 or 4 small sentences. The abstract, which is usually the first paragraph, can be a bit longer, in order to convey the essence of the article.
This site has purely academic and research goals and thus it is way beyond any commercial objectives. For example, in the iMEDIA article mentioned above, you will not find iMEDIA mentioned neither on the title, nor in the abstract. The iMEDIA just takes a reference in a paragraph for those who want to find more about it. The point here is that the articles have to address and give an overview of some research or practice problem, regardless of the approach taken within a specific project.
It is also important to have references to previous work and provide the articles editor with these references so that references are uploaded to the papers section of the site. Web references can be placed within the article.
Some papers may have more than one author. Nevertheless, it is the name of the single author that writes the article that appears. It is realistic to assume that one of the original paper's authors will write the article. Please, let your colleagues know this policy. Alternatively, you can use the name of your project or institution as an author name and then handle communications internally for any further requests.
Having one or two images or tables is good. Having lots of links, within this Web site or outside pages is even better.
If you took the time to read any of the papers linked by the articles you would have found that most of the material in the articles is copy-paste from the original paper. Just edited in short paragraphs to facilitate on-line reading. So, not lots of work to do. Just try to adhere to these guidelines.
In our experience, while writing articles for this site, We have found that those that are close to practical or theoretical problems and include some catchy keywords (like TiVo, advertising, ITV applications) are the most popular. So try to extract the significance and the essence of your paper according to the current research and practice issues and place them in the article title and abstract.
Submissions
There is no deadline for submitting your contributions. You can submit your article all year around. Articles are published on the Web site on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The preferred submission format is word .doc files.
Submit your contributions to the articles editor.
You can also send news or opinions regarding interactive television research and practice issues.
