NBC to use Olympics as research lab for new media viewership
How we watch this summer's Olympic Games could significantly shape the future of online and on-demand video, and NBC knows it. The network plans to track viewership of the Games on broadcast and cable TV as in past years, but this time around will also closely track online and mobile users. The network is referring to the Olympics as a "billion-dollar research lab" and hopes that the data it compiles will help give it—and advertisers—a better idea of how we consume its content.

Get Your Two Cents Into Videos With YouTube 'Annotations'
YouTube videos just got a little lippier, thanks to a brand new set of features dubbed "annotations." Content creators can now mod their videos with clickable links and chat bubbles -- handy for plugging in quick facts, subtitles, key points, background info and links to related videos and websites. All cool enough, but the most intriguing tweak by far is the newfound ability to slip in links to different YouTube videos, to create interactive "choose your own adventure" style narratives.

Is Interactive TV About to Explode?
Seven out of 10 viewers surveyed by Harris Interactive last November and December already utilize their remotes to make their television watching experiences more dynamic. This includes scheduling DVR recordings, scrolling through programming options, and requesting content on demand. Research like this, coupled with such business deals as TiVo joining forces with YouTube and Nielsen Company using Charter Communications's set-top boxes to conduct their surveys may hint that we're on the verge of an interactive TV explosion.

The Internet: It Might Kill TV Someday, But No Day Soon
Love it or hate it, TV, with millions of people on their butts watching it, is sticking around for a while. And even when that evil genius Steve Jobs converts his little hobby, AppleTV into something useful - like a high definition set-top box with a built in DVR and a broadband connection to the Internet, and even when he starts selling HBO and other content a la carte over it - for most people, that box will be in their living rooms, on their big screen with their butts on their couches and recliners.
