Abstract
Television content is largely controlled by the broadcasters, a situation that is unlikely to change with the switch from analogue to digital broadcasting. By contrast, the nature of interactivity and its particular application to the design of learning experiences has until recently been the domain of those involved in the design of educational software. One of the challenges that faces those involved in the development of educational applications and content for interactive TV is finding a way to tap into both these areas of expertise i.e. from both the broadcasting and software communities. In this paper we suggest that knowledge gained from Its and AIED research into interactive educational systems, focusing on personalisation and the structure of learning objects can be used to successfully inform a framework for interactive television. We discuss the notion of learning objects and metadata and outline examples from research in Learning Management Systems, to highlight some of the approaches that may be of use in the creation of appropriate frameworks for embedding learning objects and metadata in interactive television.
