Abstract
Commercial deployments of digital distribution of TV programs provide a digital TV (DTV) broadcast infrastructure. DTV is a large digital broadband network with data delivery capability and with digital terminals (set-top boxes, digital TV receivers, or PCs) at the user premises. As such, it provides a powerful platform for delivery of additional information and data services that can not only enrich but fundamentally transform the television viewing experience. This article provides an overview of an architecture for interactive service delivery to the home via the DTV infrastructure in systems with and without the return channel. It provides a taxonomy of interactive data services and describes the implementation of an interactive data broadcast. The presented approach relies on a broadcast model of computing adapted to suit the DTV environment. The presented model works even with low-cost user terminals, such as the basic digital TV set-top boxes with limited computational and graphics capability and no local disk storage.
Review
The broadcasting model of computing encompasses a radical shift in the mentality of application development process and tools. Milenkovic highlights the differences with the client-server mentality, describes the carousel concept and explains why the characteristics of the networking infrastructure are an important factor in the type of feasibly deployed applications.
