Human-computer interaction methods in digital TV applications, EuroITV 2008
This tutorial introduces the basic theory of interaction design in digital television. The tutorial covers a broad range of topics, such as content distribution (e.g. broadcast, internet, mobile TV), user interface design/development, user interaction principles, user-generated content, and sociability. In addition, we discuss current commercial developments such as YouTube, Joost, Miro, as well as recent academic research in social TV, and mobile TV. We conclude with an agenda for future research in interactive TV. The course is aimed at graduate students and researchers in multimedia, human-computer interaction, media studies and media design, who wish to gain an understanding of what is the design-evaluation theory, and what is the state-of-the-art in interactive TV research. Moreover, the course is suitable for educators who want to introduce a new module on ITV and want to know which are the learning materials. Finally, the course includes a discussion on research topics for doctoral students that would like to contribute to this emerging field.
Introduction to Interactive Digital Television, EuroITV 2007
This tutorial introduces the most significant findings in the multidisciplinary field of interactive digital television. The tutorial covers many topics, such as content distribution (broacast, internet), user interface toolkits, user interaction, user-generated content, and sociability. In addition, we discuss current commercial developments such as BBC peer-to-peer service, Google video and YouTube, social TV, and mobile TV. We conclude with an agenda for
further research. This two-hour tutorial provides the attendee with a solid background of the technologies, content, and user behavior, and an introduction to the open questions in the field. This tutorial is aimed at experienced (post-graduate, post-docs) researchers in
multimedia, human-computer interaction, media studies, who wish to gain a quick, yet in-depth understanding of what interactive TV is, what is the state-of-the-art, and which are the open research questions. Moreover, the tutorial is suitable for educators who want to introduce a new module on ITV and want to know which are the learning materials.
Interactive Digital Television and Multimedia Systems, ACM Multimedia 2006 Tutorial
Interactive digital television is an emerging field with a high impact in our societies: it brings digital content to the masses. This tutorial aims to establish a common framework by reviewing the most relevant publications in this multidisciplinary field. The review includes topics such as content production, content distribution, system software of the receivers, and user interaction. In addition, we will discuss about current commercial events such as the next generation of optical discs (e.g., blue-ray), BBC peer-to-peer service, and mobile television. Based on this discussion, we will formulate an agenda for further research. The agenda includes non-monolithic rendering of digital content, end-user authoring and enrichment of television content, and social television.
Beyond usability, broadcast, and TV, EuroITV 2006 Tutorial
Interactive TV research has elaborated on the development of broadcast protocols, multimedia applications and user interfaces for TV. These are worthwhile aspirations, but the interactive TV experience has become more pervasive than what is implied by broadcast, usability and the traditinal TV set. Emerging scenarios include mobile TV, peer-to-peer distribution, and the design of social and affective quality in the user interface. This tutorial re-defines TV and interactive TV in the context of converging technologies, and describes the state-of-the-art and research agendas for novel interactive TV products.
