Human-computer interaction methods in digital TV applications, EuroITV 2008
Objectives
This tutorial provides the attendees with a solid background on the technology, content, design, and user behavior aspects, as well as a brief overview to the ongoing academic and industrial research in the field of interactive TV. Previous research encompasses a vast and diverse body of work that accumulated over the past 20 years. In this course, we take a critical look at the research literature and ask two simple questions: What is interactive television? Can it help us reinvent the practices of producing and using mass media, such as TV? Rather than defining an over arching framework, we survey the literature and identify three metaphors that have guided interactive media research up to this day: interactive TV as control of audiovisual content, interactive TV as content creation practice, and, finally, interactive TV as a communication genre supporting social processes. We propose this taxonomy so that designers of future interactive media applications and content can choose their path of research, with awareness of other directions that have been explored in the past.
Topics Covered
The list of topics covered during the tutorial are the following:
- Introduction to iTV and Applications: Interactive TV technology and applications in the living room and beyond. Broadcast, internet and mobile systems and definition of what is the scope of Interactive TV research.
- Interactive systems and content: Enhanced TV content, interactive control of content, interactive narrative.
- User generated content: The user as an author and editor of audiovisual content. Technology and applications that enable user contributions and authoring.
- Social communication with iTV: The TV experience as a placeholder for social communication. Systems, applications and user studies of sociability.
- Advances in Industry and Research: What is the state of the art and what is next?
Target Audience
European Interactive TV (EuroITV) is a relatively new conference, so most of the people who join in are also new to the interactive TV (ITV) field and they tend to re-discover things. This tutorial is rather useful for researchers who intend to submit full research papers to future interactive TV events. Thus, we foresee that this tutorial will facilatate the dissemination of the state of the art in ITV and thus enhance the production of new knowledge in the future. Moreover, this tutorial provides an overview to experienced ITV researchers and helps them to keep up with the many different subfields within ITV. Moreover, the tutorial is suitable for educators who want to introduce a new module on ITV and want to know which are the learning materials.
Instructors
Dr. Konstantinos Chorianopoulos holds a Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction (Virtual Television Channels: Conceptual Model, User Interface Design and Affective Usability Evaluation 2004). Since 1997 he has been a member of four academic research labs (Greece, UK, and Germany), which specialize in the areas of multimedia, e-commerce, intelligent systems, and interaction design.
Dr. Pablo Cesar holds a Ph.D. in interactive digital media (A Graphics Software Architecture for High-End Interactive TV Terminals 2005). Since 2000 he has participated in several iDTV-related projects. Currently, he is researching how the TV viewers are becoming producers and distributors.
